So yesterday was our last meeting in English class before our final exams. We had a great program where everybody performed. And each group has a representative to talk about their unforgettable experiences in this class. I really enjoyed this class. I learned many things. The most important thing I learned (besides the lessons of course) is teamwork. Teamwork is not just a word, it’s about how you go through each challenge together as a team. And I can say that our group was the BEST GROUP EVER. We may have different personalities but despite this, we still deal or cope up with each other not for the sake of our grades. It’s for us to discover and unravel our hidden talents that would be a great help for each and everyone in the group. But of course without our professor’s guide, we wouldn’t make it. Sir Mabu served as my inspiration to continue striving hard for my goals. He is the one who told us never to give up. He always give us advices that no matter how hard the situation is (particularly our course), we can still make it as long as we are determined. And he even gives us extra credits/points to improve our grades. He is the BEST PROFESSOR, he would always be. :) Discourse is a serious talk or a piece of writing which is intended to teach, explain something, or present an idea. A discourse is also called a rhetorical mode. There are four types of discourse namely exposition, description, narration and argumentation. Exposition is a type of discourse wherein the writer explains or clarifies an idea or issue based on his opinion or own experience about it. Another type of discourse we discussed is narration. It is presenting your ideas by telling a story; it may be a short story or novel. We also discussed the elements of a short story. The first element is the setting, it refers to the place and time the events in the story happened. The second element is the characters, it may be a protagonist or antagonist. A protagonist is the hero of the story while an antagonist is the character that is in conflict with the protagonist. The third element is the plot, it is the story line. It is an arrangement of the events in the story. It has different parts such as exposition (the time, place and characters), rising action (conflict encountered), climax (turning point), falling action (when characters try to resolve the problem), and ending (the resolution to the problem). A plot ay be developed using different methods. First method is by a flashback, it is a presentation of a previously deleted sequence of the story. The second method is by foreshadowing, this may be clue or signs used by writers so that the readers can predict what might happen later in the story. The third method is by imagery that appeals to five senses: visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, gustatory imagery and tactile imagery. This method is sub-divided into three: Stream of consciousness, a technique that presents the thoughts and feelings of a character; Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent something; and Local Color that uses the local characters, setting and events. The fourth element of a short story is the conflict, this complicates the story. The fifth element is the point of view. Then the theme, this is what the whole story is all about. And the last element is the lesson, this is the morale of the story that we may connect to reality. Today we finished our discussion regarding the methods of paragraph development. There are only four methods left. The fifteenth method is developing a paragraph by analogy. In this method, it explains the relationship between words or ideas by giving a point-by-point comparison of these two ideas/objects belonging to different classes. The next method is developing a paragraph by enumeration. A paragraph that uses this kind of method may begin with a topic sentence that states the general idea then afterwards the details will follow. Another method is developing a paragraph by illustration. The last method is the combined method wherein there is a combination of the different methods. :) |
